ESSEd International: A Network That Expands Our Approach to Education

Colegio Miraflores México is now part of ESSEd International, the network that unites the schools of the Congregation of the Handmaids of the Most Holy Eucharist and of the Mother of God under a single mission and a single educational vision.

This does not mean that Miraflores loses what makes it unique. On the contrary: it strengthens it. We remain the same school, with our history and our people, but now we are more visibly connected to an educational community spanning several countries and continents, with which we can share experiences, ideas, and innovation.

All of this is structured around ESSEd International’s Institutional Educational Project (PEI), a document that emerged after four years of collaborative work among representatives from different countries and that today serves as a common framework for all schools in the network, while respecting the unique circumstances of each one.

People, always at the center

The underlying idea is simple: to provide a well-rounded education that helps each student discover their worth, recognize their calling, and understand how they can contribute to a more just and humane society.

This translates into three major areas of education: socio-personal, academic, and spiritual. It is not just about teaching content, but about supporting children and young people in their holistic growth—intellectual, emotional, social, and also spiritual.

That is why ESSEd International is committed to schools that are increasingly humanistic, innovative, and inclusive—schools capable of keeping pace with the times without losing sight of what matters most: the dignity of every person.

Thinking About the World to Come

The PEI marks a clear shift: moving away from the idea of an education focused solely on conveying content, and toward a competency-based education that fosters critical thinking, creativity, autonomy, and learning that truly makes sense to students.

This calls for more active teaching methods, more collaborative work, pedagogical innovation, and the ethical use of technology and artificial intelligence—always as tools to support learning, never as an end in themselves.

What kind of students does ESSEd seek to educate? Young people who are well-prepared, humanistic, ethical, critical thinkers, independent, compassionate, and persistent—as well as creative, innovative, and effective communicators. People who are emotionally intelligent, empathetic, and resilient: capable not only of earning good grades, but also of One path, one step further: toward IB authorization

It is that same spirit that is driving us to take it one step further: Miraflores is already on track to receive authorization for the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Program, a process we are working on with our sights set on next year.

And we arrived at this without having to reinvent ourselves. When we sat down to take a close look at what the IB proposes alongside who we already are as a school, what we found was reassuring: they are two different ways of saying almost the same thing. Where the IB talks about nurturing reflective, principled, and open-minded young people, we’ve been talking for years about free-thinking, critical individuals committed to a more just world. It’s the same conviction, just expressed differently.

That also explains why this step feels natural and not forced: the way we already foster critical thinking, autonomy, ethics, and solidarity in our students is, at its core, the same ground on which the IB stands. The change lies in the fact that we now have an international framework that provides structure and recognition for something we had already been building.

That doesn’t mean everything is settled. There are areas where the IB will push us to grow—to think more globally, to strengthen our proficiency in other languages, and to make that curiosity to explore and ask questions even more explicit. We see this as part of the journey, not as an outstanding obligation.

What does remain intact is our soul: the Eucharistic, Marian, Franciscan, and evangelizing identity that defines us does not need to resemble anything about the IB to continue being the heart of Miraflores. The IB is not here to take that place—in fact, it was designed to coexist with communities as diverse as ours—and that is precisely what allows us to embrace it while remaining true to who we are. The PEI continues to set the course; the IB is here to strengthen how we follow that course in the classroom.

The Value of Networking

One of the greatest benefits of being a member of ESSEd International is being able to learn from other schools that share our educational identity.

This opens the door to sharing teaching experiences, carrying out joint projects between schools, organizing gatherings for students and teachers, promoting joint pastoral initiatives, training our teams together, and partnering with other institutions.

In a nutshell: Good ideas are no longer confined to a single school. What works in one place can be shared and expanded upon in others.

For Miraflores México, this means drawing on the knowledge of an international educational community without losing the sense of closeness that sets us apart.

Innovating with Purpose

Innovation plays a central role in this project, but always with an educational purpose behind it.

ESSEd International promotes active learning methodologies, ongoing professional development for teachers, formative assessment, responsible use of digital tools, personalized attention, and projects that connect what is learned in the classroom to real life. There is also a clear commitment to continuous improvement, with constant review and evaluation of our work.

In addition, the school is strongly committed to sustainability, environmental stewardship, social responsibility, and the active participation of families, students, and alumni in community life.

One mission, a broader perspective

ESSEd International marks a new phase in the way our schools collaborate and build the future together. And this step toward the IB is part of that same journey: not something separate, but another way of living out who we already are.

For Miraflores, all of this means being part of something bigger, learning from others, and offering our students an education that combines identity, excellence, innovation, support, and an international perspective.

We are still Colegio Miraflores México, with our history and our community. But today, that history is connected—more than ever—to a network that believes in the same thing we do: that education means guiding each person to become everything they are meant to be.

More human, more Christian, happier.
